Submission Guidelines

Canned is currently CLOSED for submissions. (We’re reading!)

Canned seeks submissions of poetry, fiction, and essay. Prose submissions should be typed and double-spaced with numbered pages. Poetry may, of course, be single-spaced. You may submit up to five (5) pages of poetry, or up to 5,000 words of fiction or essay. Though we’d love to read everything you have to offer, please limit yourself to one (1) piece per submission—this includes poetry.

Please do not submit more than once per submission cycle. All submissions should be made through Submittable, our submissions manager. We do not accept submissions made through email.

Upon acceptance, Canned requests first serial rights, though all rights revert back to the author upon publication. We will keep any accepted work online in our archives. If your work is republished, please indicate its initial publication in Canned. Writers published in this issue will receive an honorarium of $10. This award will be paid through PayPal or Venmo.

Please keep previously published work, novel or book-length manuscripts, and materials published on social media or blogs to yourself. Thank you!

We are committed to responding to each submission as quickly as possible—that said, please understand that we are a small staff. Feel free to give us a nudge if you haven’t heard from us within three months.

We do accept simultaneous submissions; please let us know as soon as your work is accepted elsewhere.

Got something (Music? Visual art? Cross-genre work? Ephemera?) that doesn’t quite fit our submission categories? We’d love to talk.
